The Arnhem-Nijmegen Green Metropolitan Region is situated at the heart of a vast metropolitan area in eastern Netherlands. The region is flanked by the Randstad conglomeration in the west, the Flemish Diamond to the south and the Ruhr to the east. The region has a total population of more than 750.000 inhabitants and is combining its metropolitan, economic power, with sustainable and circular practices.
The EU office in Brussels has a brokerage role between the region and Brussels/Europe. In order to effectively promote the Arnhem-Nijmegen Green Metropolitan Region and find partners for European projects, we focus our work on the following themes:
Health & High Tech
The Health & High Tech cluster consists of a strong combination of Medicine and Medical Technology. With 50,000 direct jobs, the industry is the largest in the Arnhem Nijmegen region and is thereby an essential link in the regional, knowledge economy.
The application of the medical knowledge and technology (including Microelectronic Semiconcluster) has arisen from strong foundations in the field of nutrition (Food Valley) and sport and movement (St. Maartens Revalidation Clinic & NOC-NSF Papendal).
Smart Energy
The Energy and Environmental Technology cluster is continually building on the traditionally strong position held by Arnhem in the field of electricity. KEMA, the network companies TenneT and Alliander and the trolleybus have carried this profile through history. The Arnhem Nijmegen City Region excells in sustainable mobility/clean propulsion technology (hydrogen, electrical), smart grids and energy (storage) technologies.
Sustainable Mobility
The Arnhem Nijmegen region is a hotspot for logistics and sustainable mobility solutions. The region is perfectly situated on two European corridors, between the European hinterland and the Netherland’s two most important ports: Schiphol and the Rotterdam harbour.
The region is increasingly developing activities and innovations in the field of (sustainable) e-mobility.
Moreover, cycling is one of the region's policy priorities. Because of its innovative solutions, the region has hosted the Velo-city Conference. Moreover, the city of Nijmegen has been European Green Capital Award 2018.
Circular
The Green Metropolitan Region Arnhem-Nijmegen excels in circular business models, climate adaptation and nature-based solutions, for instance in circular construction. The region is positioning itself as a living lab of the future-proof, circular economy. This enables businesses, government bodies, educational institutes, banks and residents to find each other quickly, share knowledge and learn from each other.
